Downloading files and programs from internet
Dec 13th
When you are browsing the internet, you stumble upon a program, shareware or freeware that you would like to download and install on your computer. Just follow these steps to do that.
- First bring the cursor on top of the file or program that you wish to download. The arrow cursor will turn from ‘arrow’ to a ‘hand’. Then click on that place.
- Then, click on ‘Save’ or ‘Save to disk’. You will be prompted to select the location in your computer harddisk where you would like to store this file. A good practice is to make a folder in your C drive with the name ‘downloads’ and then use this folder for all your downloaded files and programs. Otherwise, you can choose your desktop as the destination, so that when the download is finished you can easily locate the file from your desktop.
- Now the file will start downloading. While it is being downloaded a small dialog box with the title ‘Saving Location’ will show the % of the file that is already downloaded. Once it is fully downloaded the dialog box will show ‘Download completed’. You will also get a ‘Beep’ sound.
- Once the download is complete, you can click on the ‘open’ button on the ‘download competed’ dialog box.
4.1 If the file you downloaded is an .EXE (Executable) file then the application will install itself on the computer.
4.1 If it is a .zip file then the WinZip program will open the file with its contents. In this case you can extract all these files to any of your local folders and then look for an .EXE program such as install.exe or setup.exe and double click on it install the application.
How to remove/uninstall unwanted programs
Dec 13th
Out of curiosity we install many programs. But we never use them. We don’t even worry about removing or uninstalling them. Those who want to uninstall sometimes are unaware of the right methods of uninstalling. If you are one of those then you can follow these steps to remove the programs in windows.
- From ‘Start’ goto ‘Programs’ or ‘All programs’ and then place your mouse over the application that you want to uninstall. In that program group, there will be an icon for ‘Uninstall’. Click on this ‘Uninstall’ icon to which will run automatically and remove all the related files from your computer.
- From ‘Start’ goto ‘Settings’ and click on ‘Control Panel’. In the ‘control panel’ look for the icon named ‘Add/Remove programs’ to open the add/remove programs window. In this window, there will be a list of all the applications that can be uninstalled. From this list select the program that you want to uninstall and then click on the ‘Uninstall’ button at the bottom.
- Some applications may not have the above two options and therefore cannot be uninstalled or removed using the above two options. For such programs, open the ‘Windows explorer’ and look for the folder that contains the program you want to uninstall, then ‘Delete’ the whole folder. But remember, deleting the folder maynot remove the application fully as some of the related files maybe in some other system folders.
- Another method is to use third party utility such as ‘Spring cleaning’. Such utilities are mainly used to remove unused applications.
Note: While uninstalling applications, there maybe a popup window saying that some of the files are shared by other application and asking you to confirm whether you want to delete them. Such files are usually (.DLL) files and if you are not sure then it is safe to leave these dll files.
