In a word document a feature that is used frequently is to count the number of words in the document. If you are one of those who use this feature quite often, then you can add this feature in the toolbar so that you can just click a button to automatically display the number of words in the open document. Follow these steps to add this feature to your toolbar.
- Right click on any toolbar in Word 2003
- Select ‘Word Count’ option in the shortcut menu that appears.
- A new toolbar as shown in the red circle above will be opened.
- You can drag and drop this toolbar wherever you want to place it.
- You ca click ‘Recount’ button to recount the words.

I have a question that I’ve so far not been able to find on my own and wondered if you might know.
I work in a faced-paced environment where frequent word count checks (characters with spaces) are required, and I had a machine up until a few weeks ago that, when the text I needed was selected, would display that number in this toolbar with a quick alt + c.
When that PC died and I got this one, it’s default is set on “Words” to count, so it takes a few extra seconds to get to the mouse and move up to the box, and then click the “characters with spaces” option (I know this sounds trivial, but it really does add up and is quite a bother).
Do you know of a way to set the default word count to display “Characters (with spaces)?”
